Abbotsley Golf Hotel Green Remediation

The Abbotsley Golf Hotel is home to two 18 hole golf courses, a par 3 course and practice facilities. Accompanying this is a 42 room hotel that was first constructed around the existing courtyard of an ancient, moated manor house. The club owner Vivien Saunders was the first European to play on the LPGA tour, founded the Women’s Tour In Europe and won the Women’s Open in 1977.
During the project we worked on The Abbotsley course where the amateur golfer can tackle a mature tree filled round with plenty of water hazards. 14 greens needed immediate remediation and we sent a large team to complete the work and ensure the course was back in play as soon possible.
The existing turf and 100mm of rootzone was stripped from each green and tipped on site. Using a rake bucket one of our Volvo excavators loosened the remaining rootzone. A new 50mm layer of rootzone was imported and raked into the existing surface followed by a second 50mm layer, which was then ameliorated with a Blecavator. Each green was consolidated and shaped with a bunker rake. Final preparation was completed with hand rakes and fertiliser applied. We installed Tillers Turf Poa Bent greens turf grown on USGA rootzone. This unique product had been harvested as big roll to help speed up the installation.
