John O'Gaunt Golf Club 4th Hole Construction
October 2017
John O'Gaunt Golf Course, situated in Bedfordshire, is home to two 18 hole golf courses. The club has hosted a number of national and regional tournaments. Fineturf, working alongside golf course construction partners Lakeland Earthworks, have completed projects on both the John O'Gaunt and Carthagena courses.
This Autumn we returned to John O'Gaunt Golf Club to reconstruct the par 3 4th hole. Each year an adjacent river floods the low lying approach and proposed plans would raise this approach by 1m, construct a new pond and reshape the tee.
Material from the pond construction raised the approach which was also drained and sand capped. We turfed the approach using Tillers Turf Arena big roll. The naturally high water table would feed the pond and the golf clubs excellent choice of Gabion baskets provided an aesthetically pleasing finish to the pond surrounds.
We reshaped two green side bunkers and the greenstaff carried out final ground preparations and installed big roll turf to the surrounds.
A Volvo excavator reshaped the tee formation, raising it by 1.2m and doubling it in size. Imported rootzone was laser levelled and raked by hand to create a finish ready for turf; Tillers Arena Gold.
A newly constructed path joined the new tee to green.
