Tottenham Hotspur FC Stadium Pitch Renovation & Repurpose

July 2024

In April 2024, Fineturf were delighted to be awarded a three-year contract for the renovation and repurposing of the pitch at the world-renowned Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The club opted for a Hatko Hybridgrass system with 55mm pile which was grown at the Tillers Turf site under the expert eye of Tillers UK grounds team for a period of 12 weeks. Here, it was infilled with sports sand to depths of 40mm and overseeded with a 100% ryegrass seed mixture.

During the grow-in, a team worked at the stadium to lift and extract the existing hybrid turf system which was taken to Tillers Turf in Lincolnshire for repurposing. The plastic fibres were shredded, washed and returned to the manufacturer for use in the hybrid system due to be installed at the stadium during 2025 renovations. The extracted sports sand was also screened and washed to create legacy sand, or be re-used at Tillers Turf.

The process represents an industry first and the only 100% recyclable pitch system.

Prior to the install of the Hatko pitch at the end of July 2024, the stadium surface underwent a two-day preparation process which involved light cultivation and laser grade levelling. On the following day, the harvested pitch was installed, before the finished product was handed back to the in-house grounds team ready for ongoing maintenance ahead of the new season.

This system signifies the next step in surface sustainability, using in-house developed technologies and sector-leading cleaners to repurpose all elements of an installation. Its environmentally-friendly credentials has attracted the attention of a number of the world’s leading sporting venues.

Fineturf are proud to play their part in the continued expansion of the sustainability programme at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and look forward to returning next season.
